Big Tech doubles down on emission reduction plans
Google has pledged to run its operations entirely from carbon-free energy by 2030, while announcing that it has also eliminated its historic carbon footprint through the purchase of high-quality offset assets. The tech company intends to bring 5GW of carbon-free energy online in order to use renewable energy for all of its offices, campuses and data centres at all times by 2030, rather than purchasing renewable power to offset emissions.

A storm in an (oat milk) teacup?
Plant-based milk company Oatly has seen a backlash from activists and consumers over claims it is contributing to deforestation, after it sold a 10% stake for $200M to a consortium including private equity firm Blackstone in July. Blackstone holds investments in Brazilian infrastructure firm Hidrovias, which has been linked to deforestation in the Amazon rainforest.

Amazon launches smart health and wellness wristband tracker
Amazon will enter the digital health sector with a wellness device called Halo, a smart wristband that uses artificial intelligence to track a variety of personal health measurements such as sleep activity, physical exercise and mood. Additionally, the wristband is capable of monitoring body fat percentage through 3D scans, as well as the emotional state of its owner through voice-tone detection technology.

Will the rise of ecommerce hamper efforts to reduce food waste?
The newly created Coalition of Action on Food Waste will be joined by Kellogg's, Nestle, Sainsbury's, Tesco, and French cheese maker Bel Group, among others. Set up by the Consumer Goods Forum, the initiative features 14 retailers and food majors, all of which have committed to halving food waste within their operations by 2030 and adhering to United Nations’ (UN) Sustainable Development Goal 2 (Zero Hunger) which encompasses global food waste.

Schroders introduces permanent flexible working policy
Fund manager Schroders will formally integrate flexible working into its ongoing policy. Green parties to find their voice in domestic policies
French President Emmanuel Macron has pledged €15B in new funding to boost the country’s green economy. The announcement on 29 June came a day after the Greens experienced strong success in local elections, taking control of major cities including Bordeaux, Lyon and Strasbourg.
