DIY ventilators, emergency changes to Pub licensing and Disney+ in the UK

UK brands to design ventilators from scratch

As part of the Government’s response to COVID-19, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy is currently looking for organisations who can support in the supply of ventilators and components across the UK – the Ventilator Challenge UK. These questions aim to identify the suitability and readiness of organisations to be involved in the initiative.

To support the NHS with medical equipment in the fighting against the COVID-19 crisis, many manufacturers such as Airbus and Dyson have decided to take part. They are designing and building new ventilators from scratch as required per the Ventilator Challenge UK. The companies are waiting to hear from the government so they can start producing thousands of medical ventilators next week.

The government, which wants to increase the number of ventilators in the NHS from 8,175 to 30,000 has been considering the best option to choose from the Dyson and Airbus proposals. A final decision is expected soon.

Breweries and pubs could be allowed to offer takeaways

To try to survive during the coronavirus lockdown, breweries and pubs are negotiating with the government for permission to open takeaway alcohol services since off-licences are designated “essential businesses” allowed to stay open during the crisis.

But most brewery taprooms and pubs can only sell drinks on the premises because they do not own a licence enabling them to serve customers who would want to take their drinks away. If the government were to authorise temporary permission to do so, all pubs, bars and breweries could operate like off-licences, either delivering drinks or allowing customers to pick them up.

According to The Guardian, Deliveroo would be keen to support pubs and brewery taprooms in their delivery services for self-isolating people if they were granted permission to do so.

“Things are changing for everyone and we’re a very adaptable business. If there were pubs that could work with us, we’d be keen to support them from a delivery perspective.” – Deliveroo

Disney+ has launched in the UK
